creating a directory under /home :operation not applicable

solaris 10 is a giving an error on creating new directory

#cd /home
#mkdir admin
failed to make directory 'admin' operation not applicable

google took me to some links which asked me to edit /etc/auto_master and /etc/auto_home ,then i commented the line containing /home in the above files

later i executed #mkdir admin
but there is no ouput ,just the cursor stays on the new line blinking for hours.

so anyone has any idea about this??
/home is used by automounter (linux uses /home easily).
If you want to create new user, use /export/home directory. If you want
to use /home, then you have to change entry in /etc/auto_master:
---8<---
/auto_home auto_home -nobrowse
---8<---
Create /auto_home and reboot (yes, i didn't found other way to free /home)
After reboot, do mkdir /home and then you can create user dir
You will find that /home is kind of special on Solaris as it is reserved
for automounts, please consider using /export/home to avoid these
issues.
  thanks for the response

let me use the /export /home and well editing /etc/auto* files is not helping the solution...

i wil use /export /home and in case if i face any problem i will ask u guys again.
comment the line in /etc/auto and /etc/auto_home which is mount the /home,
find the line in /etc/vfstab file, if mounting any disk under /export/home,
change it to /home and reboot system. I am sure your problem would be
resolved.

eg: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s7 /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s7 /export/home ufs
2 yes -

to

/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s7 /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s7 /home ufs
2 yes -
if you are not using auto mapping at all, /export/home --> /home or nfs mappings, then just turn the service off and adjust the /etc/passwd field.

# svcs -a | grep autofs
disabled Jul_29 svc:/system/filesystem/autofs:default

Hi There,

A spot on observation on what probably is “the” underlying details of the creating a directory under /home :operation not applicable.Too many people don’t even think about wherever there will be actual demand and more importantly what happens if this demand comes later (or maybe a lot later) than they expect

I have an acer aspire v3 and i am trying to boot backtrack 5 r3 or any linux for that matter from my usb. i have disabled fast boot , enabled f12 for boot options but the usb is not recognized. I have vmware but wireless doesn't work without a usb wifi card if there is a way to get the wireless card to work on the laptop while in vmware that would be better. all help appreciated

By the way do you have any YouTube videos, would love to watch it. I would like to connect you on LinkedIn, great to have experts like you in my connection (In case, if you don’t have any issues).

Gracias,
Preethi.
