RHEL 3.9 installation on PE2900.

www.unixbabuforum.inMy PE2900 came preinstalled with RHEL 5. Here are some of the specs.

-PowerEdge(TM) 2900, Quad-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5320, 2x4MB Cache
-No Additional Processor

-C3: Raid 1 (PERC 5i / PERC 6i / SAS 6i Integrated)
-PERC 6/i, Integrated Controller Card

-73GB 3.5-inch 15K RPM SAS Hard Drive

I have to install RHEL 3 on this machine. RHEL 3 update 9 should be able to run on my machine. I have the RHEL AS Version 3 Update 9 installer. The installation is stuck at the partitioning stage. The error message is as below:

"An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem."

It appears like a driver issue, please help to shed some light on this issue.

www.unixbabuforum.inI think, there is no problem with the disk driver.
May be the installation process is not able to find out the free space to create new partition for your new OS and I think, this is the reason behind that.
www.unixbabuforum.inGo to to the DELL site, search for drivers for your disk controller and Take a look AGAIN on the error messages! "An error has occurred - no
valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please
check your hardware for the cause of this problem."
www.unixbabuforum.inon the back side of the PE2900 you should have Service Tag. It looks like "*
ABCD1J*". Using that number on DELL support
page you can find exact drivers for that machine. After that you will see
all available drivers for it.
www.unixbabuforum.inYou must find device driver for "73GB 3.5-inch 15K RPM SAS Hard Drive"
either search dell site and find proper device driver
extract source code of "hard" device driver from RHE5 and compile under
www.unixbabuforum.inRHEL 3 needs a driver for the SAS adapter and will need it linked in to the kernel on install.
