rmt device - backing up files

www.unixbabuforum.ini want to backup my files and i am using tar and rmt0,but i dont want to run over the old backup 
can i use rmt0.1 and so on,i mean 0.2 and 0.3 and etc. 
i have 80 GB magazine

www.unixbabuforum.inYou need to understand how the library device is controlled, e.g. the /dev/smc0 device. It is not through the "dot suffix" on the /dev/rmt device. The driver manual for the device you have should provide this information. 

Unless this is just a system you are managing for personal use, I would strongly recommend you get a software package (e.g. Tivoli Storage Manager from IBM or Netbackup from Veritas) that knows how to use tape libraries
