How toassign the DVD drive to the VIOS LPAR on an IBM P570 system?

www.unixbabuforum.inI inherited an IBM P570 system that is used for development. The VIOS level has remained untouched for 2.5 years and VIOS v1.5 has gone end of life so I cannot report any problems thru IBM Support. I am now looking to migrate to VIOS v2.1.3 using a migration DVD but my VIOS LPAR does not have the DVD drive assigned.

How do I go about assigning the DVD drive to the VIOS LPAR? How is the DVD identified in the list if I/O devices that I see on the HMC?

www.unixbabuforum.inI don't remember if V1.5 had DLpar capabilities. If it does look for Mass Media. Otherwise look for it under configuration. You may have to reactivate the VIO Server for it to be seen.

You didn't say if you have dual VIO Servers or not. If you do, did you check to see if it is assigned to the other VIO Server?

Is your VIO on internal or SAN disk? Do you have another disk available? I would forget about the upgrade and install the latest version on another disk and boot to it. That way you can always go back if there are problems.

Make sure you have all your configurations saved somewhere, including pvids of each disk and the lpars they belong to.

www.unixbabuforum.inCheck the lpar profile, and make sure that dvd is assigned, if not try to assign it using dlpar if enabled, then run cfgdev on the server. If that doesn't work you'll have to modify the profile, assign it. Shutdown the partition completely and then start it with the modified profile, then you should be able to boot from dvd.
