Out of Inodes in Solaris 8

www.unixbabuforum.inI got out of i-nodes alert on FS in Solairs 8. Will it get free i-nodes
space if we delete old files ?

www.unixbabuforum.inYou get a generous allowance of inodes when you partition a disk. This problem suggests that somewhere you have a huge number of small files that you don't know about.

Example: I had this on a Solaris box. Somebody had set up a cron job as root to run every minute, and it printed a timestamp. Cron collects output from a cron job, amd emails it to the user. Root mail never got checked.

After 8 years, /var/mail/root had more than 4 million files in. Just deleting them was a nightmare that ran for a week. But they took (comparatively) not much space.

www.unixbabuforum.in1)Delete unused files
2)move some files to other partition
3) merge some files by "tar" command, then remove files..
